Gripes 1.0

gnats, gnats, everywhere gnats!

gnats_post2

we’ve got a gnat problem in our home. it’s been going on for several weeks now.  we can’t seem to get rid of them with any of the typically suggested methods. we’ve set out bowls of vinegar and other things to lure them but NONE of them have attracted ANY gnats.

ashleigh found a bazillion dead gnats on each of the 8 windows we have in our sun room/solarium — they were all along the sills and in the folds of all our roman shades!

whenever ashleigh and i sit down to hangout and watch TV/work on our laptops in the evenings, we are constantly swatting at the gnats.  i think i can safely say that i, personally, average about 10 gnats a night.

we’ve been apologizing in advance to guests that visit our home — particularly to our church’s LIFE Group that meets here every week.

i took the “gnat in wax” picture (below) as i was setting up yet another vinegar trap. the little booger flew around my head… bzzz-bzzzzzzz… landed on the tabletop… scurried this way and that… and then i blinked.

the next thing i realized as i was looking to see where the little guy went, i saw him struggling to get out of the wax.

this gnat quickly perished as the wax overtook him and pulled him under.

over the weeks we’ve been trying to find the source of these gnats. lots of folks say they — the gnats — like the garbage disposal, but we think they might be in the soil of one or two of our newer plants in the solarium.

i suppose we need to set them outside, eh?

if any of you have any ideas to help rid our home of gnats, please share… we’re rapidly approaching wit’s end with these gnats!

They are breeding in the plant containers. Dissolve Mosquito Dunks (or similar w/bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) in water and moisten the potting mix - kills the larvae. To kill adults, get "yellow sticky traps". Both are available at hardware stores, plant nurseries.
